For many of them, you'll need to climb, fire arrows, swing your sword, and ride your horse in order to defeat the giant foes that face you.Įven your climbing stamina bar, something which I criticised even The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for having, has a sense of purpose as part of your strategy for boss-killing. Truly, whether you've played the game before or not, these are some of the best boss battles in all of gaming.Īs a tiny, weak human being, peering up at the gigantic, mythical colossi is an intimidating prospect each and every single time, but a magnificent one at that.Įach colossi has their own specific weak spots, but a lot of cunning and even puzzle-solving is required in order to hit them. The sixteen hulking great colossi, which wander the land and are the real focus of the gameplay here, are positively breathtaking. That doesn't mean that Shadow of the Colossus fails to feel brand new, because it absolutely feels like experiencing it for the very first time all over again - something I could only have dreamed of being possible. Bluepoint Games clearly wanted to keep the authenticity and integrity of the original masterpiece in its released form, so there are no new colossi. If that doesn't convince you to intentionally trail away from your intended path every now and then, there are some brand-new easter eggs that can be found if you're an eagle-eyed explorer. Where most games find emptiness and insist of filling it with collectibles, enemies, or other points of interest, Shadow of the Colossus finds beauty in the environment itself. Every inch of its vast map is worth exploring as you venture towards colossi battles there are some health and stamina upgrades to be found, but mostly the world is worth taking in for its own sake. That is not to imply that Shadow of the Colossus is boring, because the truth is quite the opposite. There's just a large, wonderful landscape to explore, and 16 giants to slaughter. No villages or towns to explore, no currency with which to buy upgrades with. There are no characters to interact with. In terms of gameplay, this may be something of an oddity to newcomers, as it almost exclusively consists of sixteen boss fights. The tale of Wander and his quest to restore life to Mono is a deeply-affecting one with plenty of twists and turns

You'll just have to trust me when I say it's a deeply affecting story that retains the same punches it did all those years ago. That's the premise of Shadow of the Colossus' story, and if this remake is your first experience with the game, it's safe to say that saying any more would be spoiling the dark beauty that it later becomes.
